Charles Nicholls arrived in Calcutta somewhere between 1792 and 1796.
In 1799 he became a draughtsman in the Office of the Surveyor General, surveying Orissa in 1802 and returning to England in 1815.
Closely related scenes were included in James Baillie Fraser's Views of Calcutta (1824).
The India Office Collection at the British Library possesses a watercolour by Nicholls with the inscription on its mount, 'Bridge over the River Barna at Benares'.
