Harding (q.v.), who sent him to S. Prout for further lessons and apprenticed him to Charles Pye, the engraver. However, he disliked engraving and so followed a career in drawing landscapes which he mastered, along with being a topographical painter. He exhibited at the R.A. from the age of thirteen. In 1816 or 1818 he was awarded the Society of Arts Medal for an original landscape. He was elected A.O.W.S. in 1820 and a full Member in 1821. He first visited Italy in 1824 and returned in 1831, 1834 and 1845 (when he went with Ruskin). He also visited Gibraltar, the Rhine in 1834 and 1837 and Normandy in 1842. Throughout his life he was an ardent teacher and a most popular drawing master, J.
